In October 2016, the Greensboro Children's Museum in North Carolina, USA, launched the "Reaching Greater Heights" campaign to fund the museum's expansion. The first phase of this campaign included an outdoor classroom, a redesigned museum entrance and a new outdoor playground.
The outdoor playground was built to create a modern park with its own design character, going beyond a simple collection of slides, swings and spring riders. Above all, it had to give visitors fresh experiences that are hard to find anywhere else.
As you can see from the pictures, the design team looked for revolutionary solutions: a playground with the scale of a whole amusement park, built by combining a Neptun XXL set over 9 m long, a giant rope swing that can hold the climbing weight of 200 children and of which only 12 exist in the world, 2 of them in the United States, with a 9 m long tunnel. This is a unique design never seen anywhere in the world. It can catch your eye even as you drive toward it from far away.
May 13, 2017 marked the grand opening of the brand new Greensboro Children's Museum playground. Children are given many chances to challenge themselves, which helps them become more decisive and confident. With the 9 m tall pyramid-shaped Neptun XXL structure, higher than most two-story houses around it and made of metal and very strong rope for 200 children to play on at once, children can safely reach new heights.
In fact, it is very rare to find a multi-level structure on a playground, and it poses a challenge for children, teenagers and young adults of all ages. The designs create climbing routes up and down and are open by design, encouraging interaction between the children playing and helping develop their social skills. The three-dimensional climbers also stimulate creativity and cognitive skills, letting each child choose their own path of discovery.
Another unique feature of the design is the 9 m long rope-net tunnel. The tunnel is woven from a 60 cm wide rope mesh, exciting enough for children to move from one pyramid to the next. As you can see, the tunnel combines adventurous play with safety, entirely removing the risk of falling during play. In particular, the pyramid is fitted with a 3.6 m stainless steel slide, a shortcut for children to get back to the ground. This creates a very beautiful overall scene.
